Safety remains the top priority for Farmington Schools, with a series of substantial updates to security systems and protocols aimed at ensuring the well-being of students and staff across all campuses. Superintendent Jon Laffoon has emphasized that while convenience cannot always be at the forefront, the safety of the school community is paramount. “Our number one priority is always the safety of our students and staff. We will continue to evolve from a safety standpoint and have an unwavering focus on ensuring the safest environment for our students," Laffoon stated.
The district has installed new fencing, implemented the Rave Panic Button app districtwide, and will introduce Open Gate weapon detection systems at secondary campuses and events. Over 470 outdated door locks across older buildings were replaced with modern systems, enhancing security. Dean Campbell, the district’s safety director, highlighted several other safety measures implemented over the past two years. These include the installation of protective tinted window film on exterior doors, and all classrooms now feature a “Night Lock” door barricading system, further enhancing security in the event of a lockdown.
Farmington Schools continue to use the "SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING" tip line, allowing students to report any safety concerns confidently. This system can be accessed through the school’s website or via QR codes displayed throughout the buildings. "If you see something, say something, and you can report anonymously through this tip line without disclosing your information," Campbell explained. The system enables students to report incidents such as bullying, threats of violence, concerns for student well-being, or any misuse of alcohol or drugs.
With these comprehensive upgrades, such as the Open Gate Weapon Detection System, Farmington Schools continues prioritizing safety while creating a safer learning environment.
Here are the key features of the new Open Gate entry system:
Weapons Detection: The Open Gate system will scan all students, staff, and visitors for weapons upon entry to the school, ensuring that dangerous items are kept out of our building.
Enhanced Surveillance: We are also adding new security cameras to monitor hallways, common areas, and outdoor spaces around the campuses. This will allow us to identify and respond to any potential incidents quickly.
We understand that new procedures can raise questions, and we are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for our students. To help with this, staff will be on hand to guide and train students through the new process, which will involve entering the building through designated points and passing through the Open Gate system daily.
For your reference:
All students, staff, and visitors must enter through the Open Gate system.
This system can detect knives, vape devices, laptops, Stanley cups, or large electronic devices.
If the system detects anything of concern, the individual will submit their belongings for search and inspection and will then re-enter through the system.
