Farmington High School has been recognized for its dedication to creating an inclusive environment for all students. The school, named the December Impact on Inclusion award winner, has implemented three Unified Sports programs, participated in two state-level events, and fostered a welcoming atmosphere for students of all abilities.
Maegan Shreve, the school’s Unified Champions liaison, shared how the program has positively impacted both the students and the school community.
Expanding Opportunities Through Unified Sports
“Since becoming a Unified Champions School, we’ve competed in area-level Unified Bowling, UCS Unified Bowling, and traveled to Little Rock for State Bowling,” said Shreve. “We also recently returned from our first-ever Unified Sports Fall Games, where we participated in Unified Bocce. Now, we’ve begun practices for our Unified Basketball team.”
Celebrating Accomplishments
The Unified team’s efforts are being celebrated widely. They've previously been recognized for their achievements at the High School Semi-finals State Football game earlier in the month. Afterward, the team joined their peers in the stands to cheer on the school’s football team.
Building Community Through the Unified Club
Farmington High has also established a Unified Club, which creates a space where all students feel welcome. The club has taken on various initiatives, including hosting a Halloween fundraiser at the school’s Haunted House, organizing community service projects, and adopting a cardinal from the school’s Cardinal Tree.
After Thanksgiving, club members worked together to wrap gifts for their adopted cardinal. They are also participating in the Unified monthly challenge for December and planning to join the Polar Plunge event.
By embracing inclusion, Farmington High School is setting a standard for how schools can bring students together, break down barriers, and create lasting memories.
